Chem Club Events (2010–2011)

One of Chem Club's core missions is to organize fun social events for the students, staff and faculty of the Department of Chemistry. We update this section of the website often: keep checking to see what's going on so you won't miss any events. Everyone from Chemistry is welcome, so come out often!

Chem Club-organized events are listed in blue, other events are listed in green.

Recurring Events:

  • Every Friday: Donuts, Muffins and Cookies. Every Friday at 4:30 pm (unless otherwise noted below), Chem Club serves donuts, muffins and cookies from Tim Hortons. End your workweek with a snack and some socializing! [Davenport Atrium, 5:00 pm, free event!]

  • First Friday of Each Month: Morning Coffee Break. Starting October 1st, remember to lug-a-mug for your coffee, in keeping with Chem Club's sustainability statement! [Davenport Atrium, 11:30 am, free event!]

July 2010:

  • Wednesday, 28th: Blue Jays Game. On Wednesday, July 28th, the Blue Jays will be playing in game three of a three game series against the Baltimore Orioles at 7:07 in the Rogers Centre (SkyDome). Chem Club has bought a block of 100 level outfield seats and will be selling them for $15 each. These will be on sale during Friday donuts, or via e-mail for UTSc/UTM students. Act fast, as we expect the tickets to sell out. [Rogers Centre, 7:07 pm, $15]

August 2010:

  • Friday, 6th: Ice Cream Day.Tired of donuts? Chem Club will be serving Greg's ice cream in the courtyard. Mmmm!!! Remeber to bring a spoon and dish if you're anti-cone. Craving more? Greg's is our friendly neighbourhood ice creamery, located at Bloor and Spadina. [LM Courtyard, 4:30 pm, free]

  • Friday, 13th: Summer Pub Crawl.Celebrate Friday the 13th with Chem Club's summer pub crawl. Tickets are $10, and include appys at our first stop, drink tickets, cover at all venues, and a stylish Pub Crawl T-shirt. What a deal! Keep an eye out for tickets on sale at Friday donuts... [Various Local Pubs, 5:30 pm, $10]

September 2010:

  • Friday, 3rd: Ice Cream Day (Take Two!). In lieu of donuts, Chem Club will be serving Greg's ice cream in the courtyard. Mmmm!!! This is one of our first opportunities to meet the new grad students. Remeber to bring a spoon and dish if you're anti-cone... [LM Courtyard, 3 pm, free]

  • Wednesday, 7th: Corn Cook-out. New grad student? Old grad student wanting a "welcome-back"? Dig into an ear of delicious corn, a free beer or two, and meet your classmates. [16 Bancroft Ave, 4-10 pm, free]

  • Friday, 24th: Alberta Cultural Night. Autumn looms, but there's still time for one last barbecue. Let's celebrate all we love about Alberta (cowboy hats, beer, beef and vegetarian alternatives) while ignoring the tailing ponds. [LM Courtyard, 6 pm, free with $2 beer]

October 2010:

  • Friday, 15th: New Student Welcome and Volunteer Appreciation Party. More to come... [Insomnia, 7 pm, free for stores volunteers and new grad students]
  • Wednesday, 20th: Rock Climbing. Chem Club invites you rock climbing. Both beginners and experienced climbers are welcome. Check your email for more details. [Rock Oasis, 6 pm, $10 in advance]
  • Friday, 29th: Halloween Party & Contests. Enjoy Halloween treats while carving a pumpkin and showing off your amazing costume! The winning pumpkin (team of up to four) and top three costumes will win some very worthwhile prizes. Afterwards, please join us at Toby's Famous Eatery for a costumed evening of fun. November 2010:

  • All Month Long: Movember. Support the Chemistry Movember team in their quest to raise men's health awareness, collect funds for prostate cancer research and grow a lovely 'stache. [Donate here, any donation helps]

December 2010:

  • Friday, 3rd: Festivus Extravaganza.Chem Club's annual holiday party will take place at the Bier Markt (58 The Esplanade). Dress your best and join in a most enjoyable evening featuring delicious hors d'oeuvres, cocktails and an amazing selection of beer. Round out the evening dancing to live music with all of your favourite chemists. [Bier Markt, 7pm, $20 in advance]

January 2011:

  • Thursday, 27th to Sunday, 30th: Chem Club's Annual Ski Trip. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned skier, this trip to Mont Tremblant is not to be missed. By popular demand, we've streeeeeched our budget and are taking two bus-loads of keen chemists for their mountain fix. The buses leave Lash-Miller at 10:30pm on Thursday. [Mont Tremblant, $225]

February 2011:

  • Friday, 11th: Middle Eastern Cultural Night. It's Friday dinner with your chemistry family! Join your friends from around the department for a delicious feast of middle eastern treats. Although the middle east is not famous for its alcohol selection, a bar will be available, so bring a toonie or two. [Davenport Atrium, 6:30pm, free with $2 beer]

March 2011:

  • Friday, 4th: Mardi Gras/Cajun Cultural Night. Welcome prospective graduate students to the department and celebrate in style with Cajun food, live jazz and oodles of Mardi Gras spirit! [Davenport Atrium]

May 2011:

  • Saturday, 7th: Science Rendezvous. Mark your calendars...more to come! [L-M Lobby/Courtyard/Classrooms]
  • Friday, 13th: Chemistry Formal. Mark your calendars...more to come! [Capitol Event Theatre]
