Senior Research Associate

Description:
Under the general direction of the PI, the candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary research environment, developing instrumentation for optical spectroscopy in an ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometer. The main projects will be to (1) modify an FT-ICR mass spectrometer to enable fluorescence spectroscopic measurements of trapped, mass-selected ions; (2) implement UV excitation and detection in order to monitor the intrinsic fluorescence of proteins and (3) identify potential sources of funding to further research in the Jockusch laboratory and assist in writing grant proposals targeting these sources.

Qualifications
MINIMUM:    

EDUCATION:
PhD in Chemistry or Physics

EXPERIENCE:       

  • Five or more years’ experience in the field of laser spectroscopy is required.
  • Experience in the design of instrumentation for optical spectroscopy in vacuum environments is required.
  • Five or more years’ experience in mass spectrometry is preferred.
  • Experience in identifying funding sources and assistance with writing grant applications is preferred.

SKILLS:
The candidate must have

  • Expertise in use and maintenance of ultrafast laser systems. Experience in laser rehabilitation and repair is desirable.
  • Expertise in mass spectrometry (preferred) or other vacuum science.  
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Strong programming skills, including experience with LabVIEW.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Effective communication skills (written and oral) and ability to participate on interdisciplinary projects
