Corrections:
- Changed procedure for experiment 2 – the current ammonia test kit (salicylate reaction) is different from that described in the manual (Nessler reagent). Please use this updated procedure for ammonia testing.
- Amended pages for experiment 5 – affected sections are highlighted in yellow
- Changes to experiment 7 – Steps A.3, B.1 and B.2 should be changed to use 4.0 mL of concentrated nitric acid only; note that this is still a strong oxidizing agent and highly corrosive!
- Changes to experiment 8 – In the titration procedure on p.127, step 4, the solution should be pH 9-10 (blue colour for universal indicator paper) before adding the ammonia buffer. Add 10.00 mL of the ammonia buffer (step 5) and 10 dropes of the Calmagite indicator solution.
- Samples for experiment 9 – see the report form for the samples to be recorded.
Notes:
- Do all your original calculations in your lab notebook
- For calculations, show the final algebraic form of the equation, then the substituted values, then the final answer. See the lab manual “specimen notebook pages” for an example of what this looks like in practice
- The date on the form should be that on which you did the experiment
- Be sure to read any additional instructions on the form carefully
- Print your answers clearly in the spaces provided
- In accordance with course policy, lab forms written in pencil will not be accepted for remarking once returned
Departmental Academic Policy and your Lab Reports:
The academic policy set out in your lab manual prohibits collaboration in the writing of laboratory reports except as set out in writing by the course co-ordinator or lab instructor. The course policy is also set out in the lab manual.
