The Analytical lab for Environmental Science Research and Training or ANALEST has been jointly developed by the University of Toronto and the Perkin Elmer Corporation. The departments of Zoology, Botany, Geography, Geology, and Chemistry in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the departments of Chemical and Applied Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering have all made large contributions to this multi-user instrumentation facility.

ANALEST serves as an instrumentation facility for researchers and courses at UofT and for outside users seeking access to state-of-the-art instrumentation. It is located in the Lash Miller Building, Department of Chemistry, 80 St. George St., Rm 9

Access

Each of the instruments is available for use by university and industry students and scientists following training if required. Specific training sessions are held throughout the year in the ANALEST facility. University courses are also encouraged to use the facility. [Rates as of May1, 2011]

COMPUTER NETWORK:

All of the instruments in ANALEST are run by software (TotalChrom & WinLab) and are connected to the ANALEST LAN; this LAN is connected to the backbone of the university allowing remote access for data retrieval.

SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING:

Software packages are available for self-directed learning in most of the technologies in use in ANALEST. These are interactive and allow quick review of principles of theory and application for the particular analytical application. Software currently available includes ICP, AAS, GC, LC, and GC-MS.

LECTURE/PRESENTATIONS:

ANALEST has a small area dedicated to lecture/presentations to facilitate learning in close proximity to instrumental applications.
