NMR tube policy

A brief summary of the NMR tube policy.

For all tubes

  • Never heat NMR tubes in a hot oven; NMR tubes are thin glass and they do warp
    • To dry NMR tubes, keep the tubes under vacuum and heat them slightly above ambient
  • NMR tubes are easily scratched. Do not rub the tubes together when cleaning

For tubes on any of the sample changers (SMS or BACS)

  1. Only 8" good quality tubes are allowed
  2. Tubes that are cracked, chipped, scratched are not allowed. Such tubes will be removed from the sample rack and kept by staff.
  3. Tubes that have been heated are not allowed. Such tubes will be removed from the sample rack and kept by staff.
  4. Every morning, Monday to Friday, all tubes eill be removed will be removed from the sample changers and put into the lab fumehood.
  5. The holders are marked with the day of week that the sample was submitted. For example, on Tuesday morning, all tubes go into the "Monday" rack.
  6. Tubes are kept for ONE week in the respective holders.
  7. After one week, only good condition Norell 507-HP or better will be put in the "last call" bin
  8. Every Monday the "last call" bin is emptied. These tubes are offered for exchange.

NMR tube exchange

Due to the large numbers of abandoned NMR tubes, the NMR labs offers an exchange: bring us any chipped/broken/7" NMR tube and we'll give you a good quality NMR tube, that was left over. The exchange tube may have unknown material in it, so it will need to be cleaned.
