Message from the Associate Chair

Welcome to the graduate studies program in Chemistry at the University of Toronto. As you read about our Department on this website we hope you will see why we believe our Department is one of the best in the world to pursue your interests in graduate study: our faculty are world-leaders and research offerings are made in a rich array of ever-evolving sub-disciplines (physical, organic, biological, materials, inorganic, theoretical, analytical, environmental and nanochemistry). Research is conducted using state-of-the-art instrumentation housed in laboratories that have been either newly built or renovated at a total cost of $35 million over the past few years.
We offer both masters and doctoral degree programs. Financial support at a level of at least $26,000 per year is given to every graduate student in good academic standing as a combination of teaching assistantship, research assistantship and fellowship/scholarship support. If you obtain external scholarships, such as from NSERC or OGS, we offer substantial top-up awards on top of the value of the scholarship. In addition, all students entering the Department with an NSERC PGS or CGS award receive a one-time-only top-up award. For 2009-2010, this is valued at $5,000. More details are given under the Financial Support heading. Lastly, we value International students in our Department and provide funding that covers all the additional tuition fees that arise. We are offering a $2,000 reimbursement for travel expenses to international students who accept our offer and subsequently register as a student at the University.
Please do not hesitate to contact the Chemistry Graduate Office if you have any questions concerning our graduate program. We realize your selection of university and supervisor are extremely important decisions and we will do our best to answer any questions you have about our masters and doctoral program, and about life as a graduate student at the University of Toronto. Many of these questions are best answered in person and so we encourage you to visit our Department, if possible.
Thank you again for your interest and we look forward to receiving your application.

Associate Chair, Graduate Studies
