Supervisor Selection

Incoming students are asked to meet with four to six prospective research supervisors in order to ensure familiarity with all research opportunities within the Department. Some students may do this by means of a formal visit arranged at the time of admission. Others may choose to interview with faculty at the beginning of the new academic session in September or January.

The School of Graduate Studies has developed a series of checklists for good supervisory practice. These are specialized for supervisors, graduate students, and departments in each division.  Please review these practices to assist you in finding a suitable supervisor.

The first week of classes is traditionally designated Supervisor Selection Week during which new students may meet with prospective research supervisors, usually on a drop-in basis. In the Supervisor Selection Week Timetable, to be posted, faculty members specify the days and hours that they are available and students are not required to book appointments. However, in cases where faculty prefer to see students by appointment, this is noted on the timetable.

Students who have already visited the Department are welcome to participate in Supervisor Selection Week, as well. All students are encouraged to meet with as many faculty members in whose research they are interested.

After meeting with faculty you should complete the Supervisor Selection Ballot (PDF). Please indicate the faculty with whom you have interviewed and your top three selections for supervisor in order of preference. Then return the ballot to the Chemistry Graduate Office. Ballots will be reviewed and students will be assigned to research groups by the Graduate Studies Committee. You will be notified by e-mail of your supervisor assignment. Note that you are required to submit at least 3 potential supervisors, in order of preference. Ballots with less than three selections will be returned by the Graduate Studies Committee and may delay decisions.

Students who have already visited the Department and do not wish additional interviews during Supervisor Selection Week are welcome to submit their ballot as early as September 1.
