ENVIRONMENTAL FATE OF NOVEL FUNCTIONALIZED PFAS
  • PhD Candidate (2020 - Present)

My research focuses on assessing the environmental fate of novel polyfluorinated chemicals. Though legacy perfluorinated chemicals have been phased out and replaced with functionalized novel structures, such as GenX or ADONA, in hopes to reduce their persistence there is still more research needed to understand how various functionalization will affect the polyfluorinated chemicals lifetime. I am striving to answer how differing heteroatom linkages as well as internal -CHF- moieties behave in various environmental systems, such as mammalian, atmospheric, or at the microbial level. As observed in literature, persistent perfluorinated acids are often the products of commercial polyfluorinated substances via environmental degradation, and thus it is important to “get the full picture” from commercial application to terminal product to assess how we can better develop per/polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) to avoid detrimental persistence.
