My research interests focus on examining environmental samples for the presence of novel and legacy perfluorinated contaminants. Targeted mass spectrometry methods are limited to known compounds, while non-targeted methods can miss potential novel compounds due to limitations in existing databases or ionization conditions. F19 NMR has the capability to identify all fluorinated compounds within a sample, with minimal sample preparation and minimal matrix effects. Comparison of unknown spectra with spectral databases allows for identification and quantification of known compounds. 19F NMR offers supporting evidence that not all perfluorinated compounds are accounted-for using routine analytical methods.
