Professional Experience

Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto:

July 2006 to present. Research in oganic synthesis (transition metal-catalyzed transformations, enantioselective catalysis, organometallic mechanisms, and the synthesis of biologically important natural products).

National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California at Berkeley:

December 2003 to May 2006. Organometallic and supramolecular chemistry with Robert Bergman and Kenneth Raymond. Synthesized novel cationic Ir(III) complexes for carbon-hydrogen bond activation and investigated the molecular recognition of reactive intermediates in aqueous solution by molecular encapsulation.

Graduate Student at UC Berkeley and the California Institute of Technology:

July 1998 to October 2003. Doctoral studies in organic synthesis with David MacMillan. Developed three novel variants of the zwitterionic-Claisen rearrangement. Achieved the total synthesis of erythronolide B (a structurally complex and biologically relevant natural product) via an asymmetric Claisen cascade sequence.

Undergraduate Research Assistant at the University of California at Irvine:

June 1998. Graduated with a B.Sc. in chemistry with high honors. Undergraduate thesis on the tethered Biginelli condensation with Larry Overman.
