Hymns For Worship
Teams
One of the comments I hear a lot about hymns is that they are
boring, stodgy or just generally lifeless.
Personally, I think that this is an unfair characterization: hymns
don't have to be any of these things. I suspect that at least
part of the problem is the way hymns are presented musically.
Typically, this is as an SATB (soprano-alto-tenor-bass) arrangement.
Put in front of the average contemporary church musician, the
reaction is either to give up in horror at all the notes
(particularly guitarists!) or attempt to play them all. The latter
tends to result in a very straight, almost monotonous
presentation of a series of chords on every beat. In other words,
stylistic presentation and interpretation is important!
Selection is also important: while there are indeed some
truly awful hymns knocking about there are also many great ones. This
shouldn't be a surprise since folks have been writing hymns for at
least a couple of millenia! In fact, although this is purely my
opinion, I'd say that considerably more truly awful choruses have
been written in considerably less time, but I digress...
This is a collection of song sheets for popular hymns geared for
use by worship teams. They each consist of a single lead sheet
containing the melody, lyrics, and chords. In some instances, more
than one key and an optional choir (SATB) arrangement is included in
the file. I've tried to pick hymns that meet the criteria of
selection and ease of stylistic variation. In fact, some of the
following are contemporary stylizations. Please note that
there are numerous variations in words and tunes for hymns, so please
check to see if they are the same if you will also be using a hymn
book or overhead transparency Also, there are usually a number of
alternative tunes that can be used for any given hymn, so please
check carefully. Questions or requests? Ask
