Gaining Research Experience

The Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship Program encourages qualified students to broaden their experience in chemistry by doing research during the summer months in conjunction with a member of the professorial staff.  Students are encouraged to make individual arrangements with staff members.  It would be helpful to check out the individual faculty research homepage to determine various areas of interest.

Applications to the summer research fellowships are available during the latter part of the Fall semester and announcements are made around that time in all Chemistry classes.

The Richard Ivey Foundation Summer Research Experience Scholarship: This scholarship is for first, second and third year students. The holder will be able to spend at least four months in the laboratory of the participating faculty member. Scholarships will be applied for by students and given on the basis of financial need.  Academic performance will also be considered.  Preference will be given to students who indicate that they will be pursuing studies in environmental chemistry.

The DuPont Canada, Inc. Summer Research Scholarship: This scholarship is for first, second and third year students. The holder will be able to spend at least four months in the laboratory of the participating faculty member.  Scholarships will be applied for by students and given on the basis of financial need.  Academic performance will also be considered.

Xerox Research Centre of Canada Undergraduate Scholarship: This scholarship is for second and third year students. The holder will be able to spend at least four months in the laboratory of the participating faculty member.  Scholarships will be applied for by students and given on the basis of financial need.  Academic performance will also be considered.

ChemClub Undergraduate Summer Research Scholarship: This scholarship is for second and third year students with preference to those who have never performed laboratory research.  The holder will be able to spend at least four months in the laboratory of the participating faculty member.  Scholarships will be applied for by students and given on the basis of financial need, and on academic performance of a minimum 75% average.

NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA): The objective of the USRA program is to stimulate students’ interest in research in the natural sciences and engineering, and to encourage students to undertake graduate studies and pursue a research career in these fields.  Students must have completed all the course requirements of at least the first year (or two academic terms) of their bachelor’s degree to be eligible to hold a university award.  The normal duration of the award is 16 consecutive weeks working in the laboratory of the participating faculty members.

CHM 299Y Research Opportunity Program

The faculty-wide ROP 299Y is heartily embraced by the Chemistry Department with many projects offered each summer and fall/winter (as course CHM 299Y). Undergraduates are eligible for the Program if they have taken between four and nine credits. Participating students work in the laboratory of a faculty member for approximately 13 weeks during the summer (14 – 16 hours per week) or 26 weeks during the fall and winter semesters (7-8 hours per week). The Program represents a fabulous way to gain invaluable research experience and a full course credit simultaneously. For more information about the current projects offered, please visit www.artsci.utoronto.ca/current/undergraduate/course/rop.

CHM398H Independent Experiential Study

Chemistry program students may apply to do summer research in Germany (Baden-Württemberg) or Buffalo (State University of New York) which is funded through the Faculty of Arts and Science International Student Exchange Office (www.utoronto.ca/student.exchange/). This research counts as a CHM 398H course credit (Independent Experiential Study Project). For information about available projects and application procedures, please visit the undergraduate office (LM 151). Applications are due during each fall semester.
