Pueblo Gala 2015

Pueblo Gala 2015: A Science Affair which will be held on March 19, 2015. The event will be a unique celebration set against a Science of Food theme featuring molecular gastronomy sampling, mixology show, related science tricks, and a live performance that will stimulate all five senses. (Do check the website for the exciting menu – science and food make an awesome combination! http://puebloscience.org/events/gala2015/)In addition, there will be a silent auction featuring a variety of items and activities, including “Be a Scientist For a Day” prizes, which enables the winners to come work in a lab to carry out an activity. ‘Scientist’ Prizes include: making your own hologram in a holography labs; extracting and see DNA using an atomic force microscope; analyze your own water samples and learn how the instrument works; DNA fingerprinting; etc. Proceeds of the event serve a good cause: they will help sustain and expand Pueblo Science’s programs – and enable kids in low resource communities get hands-on science lessons! Chemistry Career Day 2015 – April 9th

 

The 2015 Chemistry Career Day will be taking place on April 9th at the Lash Miller building on the U of T St. George Campus (80 St. George Street) on April 9th, hosted by the CIC Toronto Local Section, ChemClub at the University of Toronto and RyersonU. It’s a great opportunity for chemistry graduate students who are looking to start on their chemistry career after graduate school. There will be a broad spectrum of representatives to expose students to both ‘traditional’ and ‘non-traditional’ careers in chemistry.

Last year’s career day was a resounding success, with at least one student being hired directly from the career fair. Some of the companies who attended last year were:

2015 Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer (IRIC) Student Recruitment Event

We have been asked to forward the following information to undergraduate and graduate students by the Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer (IRIC):

The Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer (IRIC) of the Université de Montreal has recently launched the 2015 IRIC Student Recruitment Event. Open to undergraduate and graduate students with strong interest in cancer research, this event offers a unique opportunity to discover the various training opportunities offered by IRIC researchers.

By submitting your application, you could be invited for a 3-day event at the IRIC, on the campus of the Université de Montréal, on June 18-21, 2015. Reimbursement of travel expenses (up to $500), hotel accommodation for 3 nights, meals and a STM Access Card valid for 3 consecutive days of unlimited travel through the Montreal public transit system will be included for all participants.

The 3-day event will include:

– Visit of the IRIC laboratories and core facilities;
– Guided tour of the campus of the Université de Montréal;
– Presentation of available MSc and PhD research projects by IRIC principal investigators;
– Presentation of ongoing research projects by IRIC students;
– Presentation of the various graduate programs offered;
– A full day of one-on-one interviews with IRIC principal investigators;

GSU Premium reimbursement guide for TAs

What you need:
•    Be a TA
•    Know your Employee Number or have the last four digits of your SIN
•    10 minutes

What you get:
•    $501.36

If you have been a TA between September 2014 and August 2015, as part of the union, CUPE 3902 provides up to $800 reimbursement for applicable health care expenses in the form of a Health Care Spending Account (HCSA). This can be used in conjunction with the GSU insurance plan.

One thing that all TAs can claim is the premium (the amount we pay the university) for the GSU health care plan. Many students are unaware of this and how simple it is to do, so below is a step by step guide for what to do. The process is relatively fast and should yield $501.36. Claims must be received by CUPE before the end of August. Any money left on your HCSA after August is lost. This process can also be repeated for other applicable expenses (See links at end of email).
