Graduate Visitation Weekend at University of Calgary, February 20-22, 2015

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Calgary is organizing a prospective student visitation weekend on February 20-22, 2015 for those interested in pursuing Graduate School in chemistry. Prospective students will be invited to travel to Calgary and get to know the faculty and students, as well as the city and area. They will cover all reasonable travel-related costs for the selected applicants. The application deadline is December 22, 2014.

Polanyi Conference on Science and Social Responsibility

The inaugural Polanyi Conference on Science and Social Responsibility will take place on Saturday, November 15th from 1:00-5:00 pm at the Munk School of Global Affairs. This conference will provide a forum for meaningful debate about the pressing issue of nuclear deterrence.

The Polanyi Conference is an exceptional opportunity to hear Dr. John C. Polanyi, a Nobel Laureate in Chemistry and tireless public intellectual, speak and engage in discussion about nuclear weapons as they relate to Canadian society. Dr. Polanyi will be joined by experts from diverse backgrounds to discuss the role of nuclear weapons in the 21st century. Other speakers and panelists include Dr. M.V. Ramana of Princeton University, Dr. Adele Buckley (moderator) of Canadian Pugwash Group, Dr. Tom Nichols of the U.S. Naval War College, Dr. Nancy Doubleday of McMaster University, and Dr. Robert Bothwell and Dr. Jack Cunningham of the University of Toronto.

Book of Mormon tickets

UPDATE: Draw date has been changed to Thursday October 9th at 4 PM in Davenport West. The Deadline has been moved back to Wednesday October 8th.

ChemClub has obtained 30 tickets for the Book of Mormon! The show is at 8 PM on Wednesday October 15th at the Princess of Wales Theater. We’ll be selling tickets for $30 each by lottery.

If you are interested in purchasing a ticket, please enter your name and email in our survey.

The draw will take place at donuts on Thursday October the 9th (4 PM, Davenport West). Eligibility is limited to chemistry students (undergraduate, graduates and post-docs). You must be at the draw with the $30 to receive your ticket. If a name is drawn and the person is not in attendance or does not have the $30, another name will be drawn in the lottery. The lottery will continue until all tickets are sold.

Entering the survey multiple times will result in disqualification. The deadline to apply is Wednesday October 8th.

Caribbean Cultural Night!

It’s that time of the year again for our first Cultural Night! This time we’ll be showcasing the Caribbean with delicious food, tasty drinks, and stellar entertainment*. This event is free for all 3rd and 4th year undergraduates, graduates, and post-docs in the department of chemistry.

The event will be held on Friday the 3rd of October in the Davenport Atrium from 6 – 9 PM. If you’re extra hungry, show up early to get a good spot in line. We’re also making a reservation for after the event, we will update here with the location.

IMPORTANT: This year, IDs will be mandatory for drink purchases. If you’re thirsty for some alcoholic refreshments, make sure you plan accordingly.

We hope to see everyone out on the 3rd. Your next chance to attend won’t be until next semester, so you don’t want to miss out!
